“No story sits by itself. Sometimes stories meet at corners and sometimes they cover one another completely, like stones beneath a river.”-pg.10. This quote is spoken by the narrator in the opening chapter. This quote comprehends the theme of connection. This quote foreshadows when Eddie will go to heaven and meet his five people.
“That there are no random acts. That we are all connected. That you can no more separate one life from another than you can separate a breeze from the wind."-pg.48. This quote was said by the Blue Man. This quote tells us that the five people Eddie is going to meet in heaven are connected to him in some way. In this instance, Eddie is connected to the Blue Man because he caused the Blue Man’s death. This quote reveals that Eddie’s fate is twisted into all of the people he meets destinies. “Sacrifice is a part of life. It’s supposed to be. It’s not something to regret. It’s something to aspire to.”-pg.94. This quote is said by the Captain. When Eddie sees this second person in heaven, the Captain, Eddie learns he sacrificed himself trying to save Eddie. The Captain said that he “didn’t die for nothing” because he saved Eddie. The Captain teaches Eddie that “...when you sacrifice something precious, you’re not really losing it. You’re just passing it on to someone else.” “Life has to end. Love doesn’t.”-pg.173. This quote is said by Marguerite. Marguerite teaches Eddie that the love he lost does have to end. Even though Eddie was mad at Marguerite for leaving him so early, he was still in love with her after her death. Marguerite could still feel his love for her and her love for Eddie didn’t die either. “Children, you keep them safe. You make good for me.”-pg.191. This quote is said by Tala. Eddie learns from Tala that his purpose in life is to take care of people. She tells him he was supposed to work at Ruby Pier and he did a good job watching out for the people attending the pier.
